Living by the Future

A short story by Nnorom Azuonye

About the story:

When Ibezim comes to live in the United Kingdom, all he has is a good education, a strong family background and a lot of ambition. A chance meeting with Lucinda, a fortune teller, changes everything for him and makes him dependent on her seeing everything in his future. It all works out fine until Lucinda foretells that the baby Ibezim’s wife is carrying will grow up to be a homosexual man. As the baby grows inside his wife, he is forced to take a decision on sexuality pre-selection.

Will Ibezim allow his gay son to be born at all?

In the end he discovers that the meeting with Lucinda was not by chance and that the biggest decision of his life has been forced by a lie.

‘Living by the Future’ is a story of immigrant life and hustle, love, betrayal and emotional violence.
