There have been other attempts to change that country that did not succeed. After much fruitless protests, the protesters disband. Some of them get married, start a family and stop bothering whether Nigeria heals or not as long as nothing untoward befalls them or their families. Others go to foreign lands and do whatever it is they do and say to hell with Nigeria, they have put in their time. So then, someday, like now, a new process begins. It is not going to be easy. It may never be perfect. It will never stick its head into its own over-blown arse like some. With the right spirit, it will work.

Ah by the way, screw toad!

~~ NNOROM AZUONYEThe Blogmasterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09010095525252838309noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8427936.post-61122473794899320572010-01-14T23:28:31.206+00:002010-01-14T23:28:31.206+00:00DON'T EAT NO TOAD

Nobody ever pretended that the Open Letter was a literary or political masterpiece. That Open Letter is a weapon of war, and as a weapon of war it has a right to be ugly if ugliness would achieve its purpose."
- Nnorom Azuonye

What is preposterous, Nnorom, is to claim that the letter that you and your friends issued on Wednesday would "begin a process of change in Nigeria". Should I say fascinating to that, or how deluded? Begin a process of change in Nigeria? You lot are beginning the process of change in Nigeria?

If Olu Oguibe does not respect these peers, it is because respect is earned. When people act beneath honor, what manner of respect can they possibly expect?

Begin a process of change? With a letter that informs Nigerians that "protest is not a dirty word" and that they "will find their voice, their vote and their values" in the "days and months to come"? That's how you begin a process of change? More than two dozen of you read that and felt that that is how you are going to "begin the process of change in Nigeria"?

Real wisdom says if you are going to eat a toad, you might as well eat a scraggy one. If all you are going to do is bleat, you might as well keep quiet because all you earn otherwise is disregard, even derision. Imagine the people in Nigeria reading your open letter. What are they thinking? I'll tell you: they're thinking these people have got no clue, none whatsoever. And that's your "weapon of war"?

That's beneath contempt. Be irritated, then: If only your weapon of war could as much as cause even the slightest irritation to anybody in Nigeria!

As for earning the respect of peers, Olu Oguibe has no need for the respect of people who are not themselves worthy of respect. For how can a generation claim respect when their growing legacy is the same intellectual dishonesty and lack of integrity that marked their fathers, a legacy of woolly equivocations?

Better silence than disgrace. That's wisdom.

Olu OguibeAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
